You can vote positive, and you can vote negative, if you think someone's post is really cool, very funny, off-topic or off-color, you can vote on it's reputation.

This thread is partially a notification, and a test of the system.

BANHAMMER AND RULEBREAKING:
There isnt really a system for how or when someone should be banned, and warnings and such.

And idea came to mind a few days ago, when i was thinking what we could use Points for.
What if we used the points as a way to regulate getting banned?
We reduce points when, say, a post gets a really bad reputation, or when someone gets a warning or breaks a rule.
Once points reach 0, they are banned from the forum.
This means some of our more active and posting users would have more opportunities to not become banned than, say, that one guy that pops on a acts immature.

As an example, say i had 130 points^{130 points is like, 20 posts.}, and i posted in the wrong thread and was a total butthead.
I could have 50 points revoked from my profile as a warning.
Say i did it again.
100 points taken away.
Banned.

Ahhh... I see. A really good system, though I had some trouble finding it at first, since it was so small and almost blended in into the post.

A suggestion. Make the symbols bigger? Or make them easier to see?

About this points thing...

In your example, you said you did the thing twice and you were banned. I know I don't have that many points right now, so what if I screw up once? I could be banned without a chance for redemption... I know it's unlikely that I would, because I'm not really a b* to you guys , but I'm speaking for maybe a new member?
I think the warning system that we used before is better. Maybe I'm just not getting it though? :S

Hmmm... Well the point was if your new your kind of on Watch, that way if you become a problem right from the get go, we can eject fast.

Maybe a warning with no points taken, 25 for an offense within a month of the warning, 50 for an offense AFTER that, and keep doubling since after 3 times of saying "HEY!", i'd be reluctant to give anyone another chance (unless you have a lot of points, which means you are an active member).
Maybe at your first 0 points we do a temporary ban, and then restore 50 points if they choose to return...

I know we shouldnt have the rules be flimsy, but i dont want someone who makes a mistake once or twice to suffer.

Speaking as the one who had set up the original warning system. I have to agree with Aries for unbiased reasons.

It gives new members a probationary period, similar to a new career
This is NOT good... new members are still familiarizing themselves with the rules, and chances are they WILL break at least one rule by accident. If they receive a temporary ban right from the get go, chances are they will be reluctant to return after the ban is up.

Negative Reinforcement, gives Negative Impressions
Still going with the new member theme. Warnings with punishments starting right away can leave the impression that we are very strict on rules even with new members. Originally when a new member broke a rule (commonly for spam) I would PM them with a link to the post saying that they did spam and it's against the rules to post with so few words. They would receive no warning but a caution, saying not to make it a habit. Should they do it again within a short period of time then I would remind them again, and let them know not to do it again as it could result in them getting a warning.

A Probationary or Monitoring Period should only be given to a repeat offender
On the old forums, new members had a 2-4 week period where if they broke a rule they wouldn't receive a warning unless they broke the rules 3 times, then they would receive a warning and lose their warning free period. Members were only put on a probationary period or a period where I would watch their posts and monitor them to see if they were breaking the rules or not, when the received their 5th warning at were at the 50% warning level.

Maybe i should rephrase what i meant...

On Watch for if they're going to become a problem. Double posting and spam are not a hard problem to fix. I meant as far as becoming a problem by cursing, lewd chat, advertising on the forum, just being a complete pain.

The points are more for members who have been here for longer than a month, and have accumulated some points. If you made a mistake after your warning, points taken. But i think if your correct your mistake, you should get your points back, or at least a portion

What you're saying is when one breaks the rules, they get a warning. Then, if they repeat, they get points taken.

Er, yeah. Basically. If you correct the mistake you made, you'll get the points back and we lets by-gones be by-gones.

However that's just an idea, this IS just discussion, nothing is set in stone.
